You may come across a turtle by the roadside, in a market, or being offered for sale online. You want to know what species it is, whether it is endangered, and what you should do.
VNTurtle was created to help you answer those questions quickly and clearly. With just one photo, you have a starting point for understanding the turtle in front of you and making an informed decision.
Why does this matter?
Vietnam is home to 26 species of tortoises and freshwater turtles. Sadly, most are threatened with extinction because of habitat loss, hunting, and illegal trade.
In practice, people sometimes buy, sell, keep, or transport turtles without realizing that the species is legally protected. When a species is not identified correctly, a seemingly harmless decision can undermine conservation efforts.
We believe that understanding correctly is the first step toward protecting responsibly.
How can VNTurtle help?
VNTurtle does not replace experts. We hope to be a helpful companion whenever you need to learn more about a turtle.
From a single photo, VNTurtle will:
- Suggest a turtle species using AI to give you an initial assessment.
- Explain its conservation status and level of protection under Vietnamese law.
- Offer relevant guidance so you know what to do next in different situations.
The goal is not to provide an absolute answer, but to give more people enough information to make the right choice.
Working alongside conservationists
VNTurtle is developed with expert support from the Asian Turtle Program (ATP).
ATP has contributed image data for AI training, species identification knowledge, and field conservation experience, helping VNTurtle build a reliable identification system and provide scientifically accurate information to the community.
